When you do hold hands together, hold for a little longer than you always do, let him know you appreciate him and you feel safe when he holds your hand. I think being honest about it would be much better and will make him feel nice too

Maybe to your confusion. I would say simple ask him that where does he sees you guys going. By that way you come to know if you guys are on the same page. And if yes, then express yourself and trust me it won’t be cringe.
