Holding hands is done while being JUST friends too. How you felt while holding his hand, is what matters and will tell the difference.
I am into 20’s so would like to share something. I have never been in a relationship but felt for someone.
When you feel for someone, it should be a feeling to not hold onto him but let it be free, even if it is one-sided. When we start holding and having the urge to have him no matter what that is when it gets wrong and everything is ruined. We love someone because of his personality/behavior/nature/compatibility/comfort level/ vibes etc. It totally depends on what made you feel for him.
It’s said the best thing to be with someone is your best friend but it can lead to your nightmare as well. What you want is in your hands and the ‘actions’ you take matter.
