30 Songs That Will Make You Cry

1. Before You Go by Lewis Capaldi

This song is so emotional, and I think that if you can apply a situation in your own life to the meaning of the song, it feels really deep and it’s easy to connect to. – Briana

2. Snuff by Slipknot

I heard it while I was going through a tough time and this song allowed me to just get all those repressed feelings out. –Jatin

3. Fine Line by Harry Styles

It’s really an emotional song that says no matter what, everything will be alright if we keep our heads held high, and that it’s okay to feel down sometimes. - Ashley

It means a lot to me and whenever I listen to it I resonate with the lyrics. - Emma

The song, melodically, is gentle and serene but shifts to being very emotionally powerful and passionate. It makes you feel nostalgic like you’re missing or moving on from something that you weren’t even aware of. Lyrically, the song is painfully self-aware and describes the desperation of falling blindly in or out of love, but also sends out the message at the end saying “we’ll be alright” through everything, even if it may not sound or feel like it. – Jaley

4. Kabira from Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani

The music and the lyrics make me feel nostalgic and reminiscent of the times I was genuinely happy and comparing those times to the present makes me sad. – Saksham

5. Come talk to me by Goldspot

That song is about one person urging someone else to talk to them. This has two meanings:

  1. Talk to them as in not be mad at them and end the silence
  2. Open up to them and break the walls

I shared this song with someone with whom I was very close and we don't talk anymore so this song really holds like too many meanings for me and I legit sobbed while this song played. There's a stanza of six lines where the tone changes a bit and the person imagines the silence being broken. And then again goes back to begging the other to talk. That one hits the most. – Mugdha

6. Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol

It reminds me of my unrequited love for a friend – Sakshi

7. Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens

It's about the loss of a lover and the lyrics never fail to move me – Ahan

8. I’m in here by Sia

I first found that song when I was at one of my lowest points in life and I was in a very dark place. Sia’s lyrics and voice in that song really hit me in a way that I had never felt before with any other song – Yazmine

9. Shrike (Live at Windmill Lane Studios) by Hozier

Just the melodies of the song, it's soothing and it feels like I can just let myself loose to it. – Dania

11. Can’t help falling in love by Kina Grannis

Her voice is relaxing and comforting, makes me feel safe and that it’s okay for me to feel what I’m feeling. Also, the memories attached to the song make me cry. – Ruchika

12. Sign of the times by Harry Styles

I like lyrics that are literal as opposed to metaphorical. I like when he sings "just stop your crying, it's a sign of the times" because it feels like he's talking to me and he's telling me that my reason for crying is just a product of the bad things happening around me and not solely my own fault. – Mahnoor

13. Goodbye kiss by Lana Del Rey (Cover)

My girlfriend suggested the song, I didn't really like it much when I first listened to it but then it grew on me. We're going to be in a long-distance relationship soon and there's very little time. I don't want to lose her and even the thought of it terrifies me to the core. But I can't really keep myself away from it and listen to it on nights when I want to bawl my eyes out. – Anon

14. Ultralight Beam by Kanye West

I feel like this song symbolizes pain along with hope and happiness, and it has such a complexity/variety of layers that allow you to let out a relieving type of cry. – Eman

Her voice is too powerful, plus urdu brings out the emo in me. - Kaifulwara Sheikh

16. Somebody Else by The 1975

It’s an emotional song and it’s been my favourite song of all time ever since it was released. Even the music video is intense and makes me feel things when I’m numb from sadness. – Disha

Takes me back to the time when I was in a co-dependent relationship. I knew they weren’t a bad person. I was under the illusion that this person would bring me the safety I craved my whole life – Navreen

It reminds me of my childhood home and that makes me feel very emotional. It brings back so many happy memories – Amani

Knowing that the song is a eulogy that Aisha’s brother wrote for her tears me up every single time – Tavishi

20. Jealous by Labrinth

'Jealous' was sung at one of my closest friend's funeral because it was her favourite song. That has caused me to associate that memory with this song; what's worse, the lyrics fit the situation quite well too. – Rachel

21. Aaoge Jab Tum from Jab We Met

It resonates with my deeply lonely self and it really helps me clear my emotions. In other words, it makes me cry better. – Manasvi

22. Pink Rabbits by The National

Pink Rabbits has one of my favourite lyrics of all time and makes me cry all the time. – Naman

23. Shake This Frost by Tyler Childers

Usually, when I need a good cry it’s because I’ve held in a lot of unresolved feelings for a long time. My boyfriend is away for months or sometimes a year or so at a time for work, and it’s very hard for us. I have a lot of feelings that I’m not very good at explaining. I send this song to my boyfriend to let him know that I am overwhelmed and “emotionally constipated” but I’m trying my best. – Karianna

When I first heard it, I was in a bad time and it really hit home with how I was feeling. Now when I hear it I cry because I remember that time and see how far I’ve come. – Summer

Adele is a singing powerhouse. The way she sings the song, it just brings out the right emotions. – Anon

The story of him forgiving his mom and making things right with her after years of abuse, calling her out, and back and forth court battles; gets me every time. – Wink

30. Patience by Low Roar

I love the orchestral sound of the song. The music is very melancholy and sombre and it helps me calm down. The lyrics are also quite upfront and emotional, I tend to prefer when lyrics directly address my state of mind. - Payal
