The sparkle is ‘liking’ or ‘upvoting’ other’s comment. (You’ll also get a notification of ‘someone supported your comment’ if a person likes your comment). While connection is when a person ‘connect’ to others, it’s a private message chat

I think if you press on a person’s profile, you can see the ‘connect’ button, that’s how you can private chat with others
