Does anyone else feel like/feel comforted by inflicting pain to yourself when you are scared? Not a lot of pain, but something like digging your nails in your palms?
It helps in distracting myselfβ¦ But itβs wrong!

Hi,
Hurting your own self may give you the satisfaction of making yourself feel comfort but it only does harm in the end. Instead try to project your emotions by some other way that could also make you feel better - like journaling, talking to a friend, exercising, etc. Anything that helps you through the pain. If these things donβt work out, you should go for therapy.

I do this in acute situations. Not when I am overthinking and replaying everything in my head. I do talk to my friends about it but it feels like burdening them when they have their own issues. I have been planning to start journaling for while now. Also planning to see a therapist.

Yes I have experienced this but in a different situation. When I couldnβt cope with my emotional pain the physical pain I would put myself through would bring me relief. I know many people who do the same as you.
Its a different way of coping with that emotion of feeling scared but it isnβt a safe/healthy way. Try deep breathing when you feel scared, it calms the bodyβs parasympathetic system (emotional immune system).

This is exactly what I go through. There seems to be no channel for those emotions. And it takes a while for me to remember deep breaths.

Keep practising and the deep breaths will come to you sooner hopefully!
Could you maybe put a reminder nearby to help you breathe ?
There may be underlying issues that need resolved. Have you tried speaking to a therapist ?

I have temper issues since a teenager and I think I was clinically depressed but not diagnosed. This was 6 years back. I am planning to visit a therapist soon

Sorry to hear.
I have dealt with anxiety, depression, bipolar, psychosis and schizophrenia. I know how difficult it can be.
It is good that you will be seeing a therapist, they can help to identify the root cause of your issues.
