This is something which, no doubt, I’ll come to laugh at condescendingly in the company of whichever friend I’m either drunk or naïve enough to share this with in years to come. Perhaps I’ll be hiding the tinge of pain that one feels when recalling a love unrequited and the equally naïve perception of a young man. Perhaps (although far less likely, but embarrassingly the only option which I’m game enough to consider), I’ll look back in doting retrospection, instead in the company of the person about whom I’m writing. Dear, dear, Leo. I should think that I’ve done as I always do, building up this grand image of a love supreme, secretly reciprocated, only to be revealed in some touching sharing of feelings as the jacaranda flowers create for us a vibrant violet carpet. But alas, I confess, this seems never to actualise and I suspect that the true outcome will lay somewhere in the chasm between my wildest dreams and my darkest expectations, a rather mundane display of how life actually is. I am older these days, however, and although I am somewhat familiar with the private smiles and fuzzy feelings that one comes to associate with falling ‘in love’ as it were, even my left brain seems to agree that we’re a good match. I’ve always struggled to find a person who ‘gets me’. Sure, I’ve always had friends who can understand where I’m at mentally and attempt to empathise with me, but I’ve never met someone who can relate to my joys, ambitions, struggles, thoughts, eccentricities, and even the dark bits on such a person level, nor I with them. Sixteen years of searching, and I seem to have found him. Which is why it’s such a shame that he’s such a cock. Jesus Christ, emotional trauma and social stigmas aside, he is totally inept when it comes to communicating. This hot-and-cold routine, peering into his soul and then being chastised for asking the same of him, hurts me ever so much. I cannot do it, no matter how good for one another we would be. So, in one last chance attempt to fix things, I’m going to tell him all this (that I can’t continue with him) in the hope that the shock of it might motivate him to repent and repair. It seems improbable.
